Open access means that articles are available to everyone – not just members – without any restrictions. Now anyone can access and download articles to read, copy, or distribute as widely as you’d like. We took this step to remove financial barriers so that our research articles can be more widely disseminated and will reach a broader audience. Recent articles are available now, and we’re working through uploading older issues.
Issues of Central Valley Birds will be published online through Open Journal Systems. This allows indexing by Google Scholar, which expands the reach of our articles. New issues will be announced on this website and via email. This accomplishes Communications and Publications objectives set forth in our 2024–2030 Strategic Plan.
Current members will still receive a hard copy of each issue in the mail. If you would prefer to read the journal online and help save paper and costs, please contact us and request to opt-out of a hard copy. New members will be able to specify their preference when joining.
Central Valley Birds publishes peer-reviewed articles, notes, and reviews of publications on the avifauna of California’s Central Valley. Of particular interest is original information that addresses bird status, distribution, ecology, and conservation. Contributions of high-quality photographs and artwork are also welcomed.
Don’t miss our new Notes from the Field section! This new section offers a venue for shorter, more focused reporting of interesting observations. As birders spend time in the field, we see interesting behavior, species interactions, and novel uses of habitat. These observations are usually of common species doing unexpected things. Some observations can lead to deeper research and more extensive articles, but others are suited to a short narrative.
