Bird and Habitat

Conservation

Conservation has been core to the Central Valley Bird Club’s mission since its founding. We work to support and recognize conservation efforts so that the Central Valley will continue to host birds for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

Projects and Partnerships

Our Club members provide expertise, field work, and financial support to conservation projects and partnerships.

Rough-legged Hawk

Winter Raptor Survey

Conducted in 2007–2010, this study identified habitat associations of raptor species wintering in the Central Valley. The results were published in a special issue of our journal in 2011.

Tricolored Blackbird

Tricolored Blackbird Working Group

The Club maintains a seat on this working group, which brings partners together to work for the conservation of this imperiled species.

We also published a special issue of our journal in 2015 on the Status, Ecology, and Conservation of the Tricolored Blackbird.

Advocacy

Through the Conservation Committee, the Club advocates for Central Valley bird species by engaging in environmental regulatory processes, such as public comment on local projects and endangered species listing petitions.

Burrowing Owl

Petition to list the Burrowing Owl under the California Endangered Species Act

The Club joined multiple other organizations to petition for the listing of this declining species.

Levee

Lower American River levee projects

These projects proposed to remove much of the oak and streamside woodlands along the lower American River and destroy off-channel ponds important to wintering waterfowl to mitigate for bank protection projects with deficient environmental review.

Western Kingbird

Southeastern Sacramento County solar projects

While we recognize the benefits of renewable energy generation, grassland habitat important to Central Valley bird species is rapidly disappearing.
